Reattach a vane after you have removed the old one. Align the carrier stem where the new vane will go with the rectangular hole in the headrail by pulling on the chain. Push a piece of string through the hole in the carrier stem. Push the stem into the carrier body. Pull the chain and align the other stems with the one you are going to replace. Grab both ends of the string and gently pull downward to move the stem back in place. Slide the vane into the grooves and snap it into place.

STEP 3 

Shorten the pull cord on your vertical blinds if it is too long. Look inside the headrail and locate the vane carrier where the cord is tied in a knot. Hold that vane carrier with one hand, and with the other, pull out the extra cord until the cord safety device reaches the desired length. Tie a knot in the cord at that location. Pull the control chain to ensure the blinds work properly, then cut the excess cord half an inch below the knot.

STEP 4

Create an overlap if there are gaps between adjacent blinds. Look inside the headrail of one blind and locate small, white tubes. Pry off one of the white tubes so the vanes move closer to the edge of the headrail, which should eliminate any gaps.

STEP 5

Pry off the control end cap with a flat screwdriver from the headrail if the control chain is difficult to operate. Locate the pulley with a metal rod in the middle. Find the round washer that has a jagged hole in the center. Gently tap the control rod on the end to loosen it. This should make the control chain easier to operate.

Fortunately, these clips are inexpensive and anyone can easily complete the task of replacing them.

STEP 1
Contact the manufacturer of the vertical blinds to order replacement clips. Use the instruction manual that originally came with the vertical blinds to find the manufacturer's telephone number. Refer to the manual when customer service asks for the model of the blinds to insure a part match.

If the manufacturer of the vertical blinds is unknown, or the instruction manual is missing, look on all areas of the vertical blind frame for a tag or stamp with the company name and/or model number and search online for the manufacturer's website and contact information.

STEP 2
Open the blinds so that the slats are spread out from the stacked position. Ensure that slats are in the full open position by using the swivel tool.

STEP 3
Stand on a stool or stepladder next to the broken blind and remove the slat from the broken blind clip by lightly prying the clip open with your fingers. Gently slide the slat out and set it aside.

STEP 4
Grip the clip or stem with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Gently twist the clip and slightly pull on it until it pops off the gear.

STEP 5
Place a new clip into the grip of the pliers. Place your thumb and pointer finger around the gear to hold it in place. Position the new clip over the gear. Gently push the clip into place by applying a little pressure.

STEP 6
Gently push the slat into the clip. Ensure that the clip lip is positioned over the hold of the slat by wiggling it around and gently pushing the clip ends together.

Repeat the above steps for all broken vertical blind clips.
